Frequently Asked Questions
The coffee
Where does your coffee come from?
Our blends are put together and roasted for us by a long-established roastery in Sheffield, then bagged under our own label and posted directly to you. The blends, the names and the brand are ours; the roasting is done by people who have been doing it a great deal longer than we have.
What is the difference between the blends?
Five blends, each named after an animal of the Finnish forest. Kettukahvi (fox) is the smooth, smoky all-rounder and the safest first choice. Karhukahvi (bear) is strong, earthy and blended with Robusta. Susikahvi (wolf) is a lighter roast with chocolate notes. Ilveskahvi (lynx) is notably mild with almost no bitterness. Siilikahvi (hedgehog) is our decaf.
I cannot decide. Where do I start?
With Näyte. It is 250g of each of our four main blends — a full kilogram, delivered free — so you can taste all of them and settle on your favourite rather than guessing from a description.
Which is the strongest?
Karhukahvi, comfortably. It is blended with Robusta, which carries roughly twice the caffeine of Arabica and gives a heavier, more bitter cup. Most speciality roasters will not touch Robusta. We think that is their loss.
Grind and brewing
Which grind should I choose?
Pick the one that matches how you brew: Filter for a drip or filter machine, French Press for a cafetière, Espresso for an espresso machine, or AeroPress Coarse or Fine for an AeroPress. If you genuinely are not sure, choose Filter — it suits most home machines. If you grind at home, choose Beans. There is more detail in our grind guide.
How much coffee should I use?
About 1 gram of coffee to 15 grams of water, which is roughly two heaped tablespoons per large mug. For a standard 1 litre cafetière that is about 65g. Using too little is by far the most common reason home coffee tastes weak.
How should I store it?
Somewhere cool, dark and airtight — a cupboard, not the fridge, and not on a sunny worktop. Coffee does not go off in any dangerous sense, but it does go flat. Aim to finish a 250g bag within a month of opening.
Do you sell grinders or cafetières?
Not at the moment. If you need one, any high-street cafetière will do the job perfectly well — or just let us grind for you and skip the equipment entirely.
Ordering and delivery
How much is delivery?
Delivery is charged at a flat rate and shown in your basket before you pay. Orders over £25 are delivered free, and delivery on the Näyte sample pack is always free.
How long will my order take?
Orders are usually picked and dispatched within two working days and sent by Royal Mail 48, which normally arrives two to three working days after that. Full details are in our shipping policy.
Do you deliver outside the UK?
Not currently. We deliver across the United Kingdom only. If you want coffee sent elsewhere, email us and we will tell you what is possible.
Can I order for my office?
Yes. We supply offices and small businesses from as little as 1kg a month, at better rates than our retail prices. Tell us roughly how many cups a day your team gets through on our business page and we will suggest a blend and a schedule.
Do you offer subscriptions?
Not yet. If that is something you would use, tell us — it is on the list and it helps to know people want it.
If something is not right
What if I do not like it?
Email us within 30 days and tell us what you did not get on with. We will either send you a different blend we think suits you better, or refund you — your choice. You do not need to send the coffee back. Taste is personal and we would far rather hear from you than have you quietly not order again.
What if my order arrives damaged?
Contact us straight away with a photograph and we will refund you in full including carriage, or send a replacement. See our refund policy for the detail.
